Google announced the updates to Google Classroom on August 1st, 2017 by bringing in amazing updates to ease teachers’ lives. Google Classroom is known to make teaching and learning easy for teachers and students even outside the school/college premises. The free web service can be used by schools, colleges, and anyone with a personal Google Account.

Google Classroom, a web-based tool that works across devices, is conceptualized to offer a common platform to teachers and students to get the best advantage of imparting and acquiring knowledge.

Google Classroom is designed to enable digital teaching and learning process for teachers and students enrolled in the classroom. Teachers can share lecture notes and learning material while students can submit their presentation slides. Teachers can post & collect assignments and see which student has not completed the work, while students can view & submit their assignments. Apart from providing an exceptionally interactive means of teaching, Google Classroom provides many time-saving features for students and teachers.

Earlier Google Classroom was available to users on their institutional accounts, but the update to Classroom in June 2017 has opened the doors to allow anyone to join classes. Although Google Classroom is still maturing, there are number of benefits offered to the educationists.

  • Light Initiation Process
Teachers can use their individual Google account to initiate a classroom. They can add students directly or share a code with their students to join the class and that’s it… It takes just few minutes to set up and enroll in the classroom virtual classroom where the role of teachers and students is exactly same as in the actual classroom.

  • Effective Collaboration
Teachers and students can effectively collaborate by sharing resources. Teachers can publish announcements, post assignments and other learning material for students. Students can share resources with their classmates and can also participate in discussions in the classroom facilitated by a student response system by providing answers to the questions raised.

  • Systematic Organisation
A big relief to the teachers who always try to search a corner in their cube when students approach them for assignment submissions. Even to those who forget where they kept the soft copies of assignments submitted by the students. Classroom offers a systematic way of organizing students assignments by class, subject and date. Teachers can also share the documents with the fellow teachers. On the other side, students also don’t have to worry about losing their copy of questions before their assignment is complete. They can view all their assignments on assignments page with all the class material provided by teachers in separate folders in Google Drive.

  • Personal Attention to Students
Google has advertised Classroom as a distinguished means of offering education to every student. Students who struggle after class hours for additional help can now get support from their teachers and classmates. Teachers can give personal attention to such students by creating exercises and sharing other resources for further help. Even those students who attend evening programs and/or workshops can also take the advantage of Google classroom.

  • All-in-one Learning Platform
The reason behind acceptance of this learning platform is its simplicity. Teachers can easily create e-assignments and notify the students about the deadline of submission. Once submitted by students, the teachers can assess and give marking to the assignments accordingly.

  • One Level Up
The add-ons to Google Classroom can raise its experience to the next-level for its users. SlideShot takes a screenshot every minute and saves it to Google Drive. Once finish, it automatically places the captured screenshots on a Google Slides presentation; one screenshot per slide. The students can then submit these Slides through Google Classroom. Driveslide is another app for creating automatic Google slide presentation in which images can be directly added from a Google Drive folder with just a single button click.

A recent update to Google Classroom has made it possible for teachers to do the following in classroom:

  • Display class code enabling students to easily join their classroom
  • Create individual profile of students registered in the classroom
  • View each student in classroom on a dedicated page
  • Easily create assignments for individual students or for a group of students and give feedback accordingly
  • Give decimal grading to students on the tests/assignments submitted. This was not possible till date
  • Provide question-wise feedback to students for possible improvement on specific topic
  • Transfer ownership of their class to another teacher
  • Reorder their classes based on daily schedule and work load
  • Integrate the class with Quizizz,Edcite, Kami
  • Sync their Google class from the existing MIS using IMS OneRoster CSV files
Class Code

Here is what students get from the recent Google Classroom update:

  • Schedule their submission/coursework to be posted on a specific date by setting the scheduled Date and Time
  • Access the calendarId of a particular course to establish Classroom and Google Calendar API integrations
  • Identify whether a user is a verified teacher in the classroom or not.

The speed with which Google is improving its apps you never know by the time you will start using the features of latest Google Classroom, a new update will be announced; in this year, or in coming months, or may be in this month itself.
